Looking to make a difference in Salt Lake City? Want to help the homeless? We’ve all seen the panhandlers on the freeway ramps, parking lots, or street corners asking for money. When looking at a hand-lettered cardboard sign and weathered clothes, it’s difficult to differentiate between those in need and the potential scam artist. Make your charitable donations count, even if it’s spare change, by helping those who truly need it. And that doesn’t mean handing money out of your car window.
The Homeless Outreach Service Team, aka HOST, is a proactive and collaborative effort to move the community in Salt Lake City beyond enforcement of order maintenance issues—public intoxication, disorderly conduct, panhandling, et cetera—to a partnership with homeless service providers that connects homeless individuals with social services and resources. 100% of donations are dispersed to local homeless service providers.
Rather than handing your spare change or dollars to a panhandler, consider making your donation to a designated HOST parking meter in downtown Salt Lake City. In lieu of handouts to panhandlers, all money collected in these refurbished parking meters goes directly toward programs and resources to help the homeless. These programs help those in need get their lives back on track.
