“Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving” – Albert Einstein
May is National Bike Month. No time has been better to jump on a bike and start exploring the outdoors. However, not everyone has their own wheels to ride around. And many of us don’t bring our bikes with us downtown to ride. What better way to put pedal to the pavement than with the non-profit GREENbike SLC Bike Share Program.
GREENbikes are designed to eliminate the short-distance car trips in the city, making Salt Lake City air cleaner and helping you burn a few calories in the process. They are built to be ridden by people wearing regular clothes and carrying ordinary stuff. Need to get from your office to lunch? Don’t drive. Take a GREENbike. This also makes it easier to take TRAX into Salt Lake City. Get off at any major downtown TRAX stop and use a GREENbike to get exactly where you want to go. GREENbike stations are conveniently located all over downtown—including less than a block from Broadway Park Lofts and Pioneer Park.
GREENbikes are not rentals. Riders can take any bike, from any station, as many times as they like for a small membership fee. Memberships range from $5 for 24-hour access to $75 for 12 months. Annual members get an online profile which includes GPS data showing how many calories you’ve burned, how far you rode, and how many lbs. of toxic pollutants you didn’t put into the air. Expansions are planned for this year so keep your eyes out as more stations and bikes show up around the city.
For Salt Lake City loft living and downtown dwellers who already have access to their own bike, check out this Salt Lake City bikeways map which helps connect locals to the city’s urban environment. The map shows bike routes, public transit, trailheads, sites of interest, farmers markets, local parks, community gardens and many other places that highlight the local flavors that make Salt Lake City an internationally recognized green city.
